The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Puts Crew Decisions at the Heart of Its RPG
Owlcat's space RPG links a customizable captain, real-time squad combat, and relationships aboard a shared ship.

Osiris Reborn Crew
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn starts with a mercenary caught in a disaster, rather than a commander who already has everything under control. Owlcat Games is building a third-person action RPG around that instability: surviving a conspiracy is one problem, keeping a crew together is another.
A Captain With a Place in the Solar System
The setup puts a Pinkwater Security mercenary on Eros when a lockdown turns shore leave into a crisis. Players create an Earther, Martian, or Belter captain. Those are origins within The Expanse's divided society, not three different games or a confirmed list of combat classes.
Owlcat describes companions with separate loyalties and personal histories, and relationships that change with the captain's decisions. The ship is their shared home. That gives the role-playing premise a useful focus: leadership should matter between firefights, as well as during them.
It is an appealing foundation for a crew RPG, but the important test will be whether disagreements produce meaningful consequences. A character's biography can establish tension; the decisions available to the player have to carry it through the campaign.

Osiris Reborn Basics
The Squad Extends Beyond Two Companions
Combat combines cover-based shooting, abilities, and real-time orders. Two companions join the captain in the field, while others can assist remotely by interfering with systems or distracting enemies. The distinction matters because an off-screen crewmate is not necessarily absent from the mission.
The sensible expectation is a squad action RPG, not a turn-based encounter system inferred from Owlcat's other work. How readily players can read threats while issuing orders remains a question for sustained play.
What the Founder Beta Actually Offers
Owlcat's April 22 beta announcement describes one complete early-game mission, including progression, dialogue, cutscenes, and gunplay. The studio estimates roughly one to two hours, depending on playstyle. That is a bounded sample, not access to the whole story.
The announced access route requires a founder account with Miller's Pack or the Collector's Edition. Eligible users choose their platform through the account's Digital Download area and redeem the supplied code. A Steam wishlist entry alone does not meet those conditions.
Steam currently lists Q2 2027 as the planned release window. That identifies a quarter, not an exact launch day. For anyone following the project, the useful distinction is between a restricted beta that demonstrates an early mission and the finished campaign that still lies ahead.
