How Steam Badge Crafting Works
Steam badges are crafted by combining a complete set of trading cards for a specific game. Every game that participates in the Steam trading card system has its own unique card set — typically 5 to 15 cards per set.
When you craft a badge, you receive 100 XP toward your Steam level, along with a random emoticon, a profile background, and sometimes a Steam coupon. You also get the badge itself, which is displayed on your Steam profile.
Each normal badge can be crafted up to 5 times per game (levels 1–5), giving you up to 500 XP per game from normal badges. Foil badges can only be crafted once per game for 100 XP.
To progress efficiently, choose cheap card sets with low total set prices. The calculator above shows estimated costs based on current market data.
Normal vs Foil Badge Costs
For budget leveling, always use normal card sets. Foil badges are primarily for collectors or prestige — they are far more expensive per XP gained.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Steam badge crafting work?
To craft a Steam badge, you need a complete set of trading cards for a specific game. Once you have all cards in a set, you can craft them into a badge from your Steam badges page. Each badge craft gives you 100 XP toward your Steam level.
How much XP do I need to level up on Steam?
Each Steam level requires 100 XP. So going from level 1 to level 10 requires 900 XP, which means crafting 9 badges. The XP requirement is consistent at 100 XP per level throughout all levels.
Can I craft the same badge multiple times?
Yes — for normal badges, you can craft the same badge up to 5 times, earning 100 XP each time and incrementing the badge level from 1 to 5. Foil badges can only be crafted once per game.
What is the difference between normal and foil badge costs?
Normal badges use standard trading cards, which are generally cheaper and more plentiful. Foil badges require the rarer foil versions of each card, which typically cost significantly more on the Steam Market.
