Z Steel Soldiers follows the aftermath of the original Z, casting players as commanders of robot troops in a war against Zod and his space renegades. Its tone pairs large-scale conflict with offbeat characters: the game describes fearless soldiers who drink rocket fuel and pick fights with saber-toothed snow slugs. A non-linear plot runs through the war’s theatres, giving the battles a narrative thread rather than presenting them as isolated skirmishes.
The defining strategic pressure is resource control. Capturing more territories enlarges the resource flag in each one and speeds up production, linking map expansion directly to the ability to build forces. Yet the game’s opening advice is to survive the immediate firefight before turning to construction, so its design sets urgent combat against longer-term planning. The available roster ranges across air, ground and sea units, from World War II-style vehicles to modern jet fighters, while nine robot types have distinct abilities.
Its environments also have a tactical flavor, with local and world forces affecting the battlefield, including smoke disturbed by passing helicopters. The game’s 30 levels span six worlds, framing its robot warfare as a varied sequence of theatres.
