Z is a real-time war game built around a brisk contest for territory and resources. Its battlefields are described as a free environment, with the central objective to seize ground and strengthen your position before the opposing force does. The game’s comic cut scenes and humorous level introductions give its military premise an irreverent tone, while its conditional music changes with the mood of combat.
Command is shaped by both the units you deploy and the facilities you capture. Six kinds of robot soldiers have individual personalities, and may respond unpredictably to orders; they can perform many different actions and wield rifles, machine guns or antitank launchers. Factories let you choose which robots or vehicles to produce, while control of repair facilities, radar and other installations supports your campaign. Tanks, jeeps, repair vehicles, armoured personnel carriers, field guns and missile launchers broaden the tools available on the battlefield.
The campaign is presented as a sequence of challenging levels across five planets, whose terrain ranges from Arctic wasteland to volcanic regions. An in-game map and radar offer a view of the battlefield, and robot leaders deliver spoken alerts.
