In Z Dawn, the familiar world has collapsed under a zombie virus, and the player leads a group of survivors through its aftermath. The long-term objectives are to find a cure and evacuate the survivors, but making progress depends on gathering supplies and navigating random encounters. Its fast-paced, turn-based structure, mixed with roguelike elements, frames the apocalypse as a sequence of decisions rather than a purely action-driven fight.
Survival involves more than confronting zombies. Players search locations for resources such as food, medicine, weapons and ammunition, then manage survivors individually, equipping them to suit their skills. The encampment can be built up, upgraded and fortified, while group members can be assigned jobs including farming, guarding, building and mechanics. Crafting and equipment upgrades add another layer of preparation, as do vehicles that can be repaired and improved for driving and defence.
Encounters also extend beyond the undead: the group may meet strangers, other survivors and rival encampments, with events offering possible outcomes to choose between.
