Set seven centuries before Ys I & II, Ys Origin follows a search party sent to the Devil’s Tower after the twin Goddesses vanish. The story is told through the memories of apprentice knight Yunica Tovah and sorcerer Hugo Fact, placing the mystery of the goddesses’ disappearance at the center of a tale about Ys under demonic attack. The tower gives this prequel a focused setting for its unfolding conflict.
The game blends action, exploration, platforming and role-playing in an arcade-like format with Metroidvania elements. Its design includes distinct playable characters, puzzles, platforming challenges and bosses described as screen-filling, with complex AI. Five difficulty settings accommodate different levels of challenge, while unlockable Time Attack, Boss Rush and Arena modes offer additional ways to engage with combat and enemy encounters.
That mix gives Ys Origin a clear single-player shape: a story-led dungeon adventure paired with optional challenges and replay-oriented modes. Its leaderboards provide a competitive angle alongside the campaign, but the core appeal is the contrast between character-specific play, exploration through the tower and demanding boss fights.
