Set in China during the Western Han era, Xuan-Yuan Sword VII follows Taishi Zhao, a swordsman whose family is killed in a mysterious fire. Ten years later, a vanished bamboo slip resurfaces amid war and famine, drawing him into a search for the truth. The game frames this personal journey within a historical-fantasy world shaped by Chinese history and mythology, including the fate of the Mohists and their advanced mechanical craft.
Combat unfolds in real time from a third-person perspective, with combos built around active skills, dodging, blocking, and ripostes. Its distinctive Elysium Scroll adds more than a combat tool: it can absorb monsters and support item creation. In the Elysium Rift, Zhao slows nearby time and alters objects’ physical properties; captured creatures can also become Fusion Lab materials for producing new monsters or, sometimes, passive skills. Elysium facilities offer further ways to improve equipment and develop abilities.
The single-player format makes this an authored, character-led action RPG rather than a shared-world activity. Its blend of combo combat, monster crafting, and a myth-inflected historical setting gives the journey a more unusual identity than a straightforward sword-fighting quest.
