Set in 2009, with the Cold War still underway, Xenonauts 2 casts you as the commander of a covert multinational organization confronting an extraterrestrial incursion. Its strategic layer spans a worldwide network: establish and arrange bases, coordinate radar coverage and aircraft, and assign facilities to roles such as research, manufacturing, or rapid response. The threat develops across regions, so decisions about where to station resources shape how your organization can react.
When engagements begin, ground combat is a dangerous tactical operation built around positioning, ammunition, sightlines, and cover. Missions also feed the wider campaign: recovering alien samples and equipment can support research, while autopsies may reveal weaknesses. That creates meaningful tradeoffs between striking quickly and preserving bodies or technology for study. Soldiers can gain abilities through their actions in combat, but casualties are part of the risk. Aircraft add another front, as jets respond to UFO sightings and fight to bring them down.
The game combines this layered, ongoing campaign management with discrete tactical battles, rather than presenting its conflict as a single uninterrupted encounter.
