XCOM: Enemy Unknown casts the player as commander of a secret paramilitary organization defending Earth from a global alien invasion. Its central design joins decisions made far from battle with the risks of directing soldiers on the ground: research alien technology, manage resources and personnel, and build up an operational headquarters while planning missions against the threat.
Combat is turn-based, with the commander directing soldier squads through ground battles and deploying aircraft such as the Interceptor and Skyranger. Between missions, recruiting and customizing soldiers gives the campaign a personnel-management dimension, while expanding the base and advancing technology connect those strategic choices to the fight. The game also frames the invasion as a worldwide crisis, with missions and dealings with governments around the globe.
Its distinctive appeal, though, rests on the interplay between measured tactical turns and broader command responsibilities: players are asked to protect humanity not only through battlefield orders, but also through the preparation and organization that make those missions possible.
