Set five years after XCOM 2, Chimera Squad imagines City 31 as a fragile experiment in human-alien coexistence. Players lead an elite group of former adversaries against underground threats pushing the city toward chaos. Its agents are individuals rather than interchangeable units: each has a distinct personality and tactical abilities, giving team selection a character-driven dimension alongside its strategic purpose.
Combat reshapes XCOM’s turn-based formula around discrete encounters and a breach phase. Players assign agents to entry points, then coordinate their assault using breach-specific skills. Once the encounter begins, an alternating initiative order places individual agents and enemies in sequence, making the next unit to act and the most exposed target central to tactical decisions. Complementary classes and cooperative actions also let the right pairing produce devastating combos.
The fight extends beyond missions into a high-tech headquarters, where investigations, operations and agent assignments compete for attention as unrest rises across City 31’s districts.
