X-Blades follows Ayumi, a treasure hunter who battles monsters and powerful bosses across a colorful fantasy world. Its anime-inspired presentation frames the action as a fast-moving spectacle, with cinematic effects such as bullet time and motion blur. The focus is not simply on reaching the next foe: Ayumi’s motives and actions also connect to alternative endings, giving the adventure a branching-story element.
Combat combines her gunblades, which serve at both long and close range, with a broad selection of spells, power-ups and leap-based combos. Experience points unlock skills, while RPG-style upgrades let players improve abilities and weapons. The game also offers four difficulty modes, more than 30 opponent classes and boss encounters, making its single-player format a progression through designed challenges rather than a shared multiplayer session.
The setting ranges across roughly 40 magical indoor and outdoor worlds, whose vivid anime-style design is part of the game’s identity. Exploration has practical rewards too, with hidden power-ups and a stats screen encouraging players to investigate each level while building Ayumi’s combat capabilities.
