Windward casts each voyage as a journey through a procedurally generated world of dynamic towns, shifting opportunities, and dangerous waters. Sailing farther from the starting point brings tougher challenges and better rewards, while pirates and adaptive AI make exploration part of the danger. The world is designed to respond to what players do, rather than serving only as a backdrop.
Its activities connect exploration to the growth of towns and the player’s faction. Trade and questing help towns prosper, and supplying their needs can prompt further growth; successful communities then offer upgrades and stronger ships. Vessel choice also shapes the approach: nimble Schooners suit exploration, while Ships of the Line bring heavy firepower to combat. Players can fight pirates, pursue quests, trade, or chart their own course across the open water.
Windward supports both solo sailing and cooperative play, with players able to work together against dangerous foes and expand their influence. Friendly AI may join a player’s adventures as reputation grows, while other AI characters can challenge a feared captain or avoid them.
