We Who Are About To Die casts you as a gladiator climbing from the Pits through the Arena and Stadium, seeking victory and glory in a city built around spectacle. Its defining tension is the single-life run: each fighter faces an eventual death, while the path to becoming a legend depends on surviving and adapting. Random events, match choices and changing arena conditions give each attempt a different shape rather than a fixed march through identical bouts.
Combat demands deliberate control. Directional attacks and physics-based movement put momentum, timing and targeted weak spots at the center of each exchange; frantic button pressing is no substitute for learning how to move and strike. The game also extends strategy beyond the fight: players can manage patrons and crowds, develop a school and training regime, seek information, and hire professional help. Weapons and armor are modular, with eight weapon classes that play differently, encouraging distinct approaches to the arena.
Duels and group battles offer contrasting arena encounters, while dynamic audiences reward entertainment as well as victory. Between randomized events, equipment decisions and career management, the game pairs hands-on fighting with broader choices about how to pursue a champion's run.
