Watch_Dogs follows Aiden Pearce, a hacker and former thug whose family is struck by a violent tragedy. Set in Chicago, the game makes the city’s connected infrastructure central to his pursuit of those responsible: its Central Operating System tracks residents and governs much of the technology around them. That premise gives hacking a personal purpose, while framing the city itself as part of the conflict.
The defining play idea is using a smartphone to interfere with connected systems in the moment. Pearce can access security cameras, retrieve information to locate targets, alter traffic signals, stop trains, and raise drawbridges. These options sit alongside direct combat, with baton attacks, firearms, and combinations of shooting and hacking shaping encounters. Driving and traversal broaden the approach: the game describes a large Chicago environment to explore by vehicle, as well as routes through buildings and across rooftops.
Watch_Dogs is presented as both a single-player action-adventure and a game with multiplayer. Its advertised multiplayer design links player interaction with the single-player world, offering cooperation and confrontation in open-world play rather than separating those encounters behind menus and loading screens.
