Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Winter Assault expands Dawn of War with new units, strategies and harsh winter battlegrounds. Its campaign is divided into two opposing stories: the Order side follows the Eldar and Imperial Guard defending the Imperium, while the Disorder side puts Orks and Chaos Space Marines on the offensive. That split gives the expansion a distinct structure, with players commanding different forces across the same conflict.
The Imperial Guard brings heavy armor, additional troop units and defensive and ranged tactics built around overwhelming numbers. A new tech tree and new abilities add strategic options, while urban terrain and interactive objects and structures shape the battlefields troops must cross. The expansion also adds animations and strategies to the base game’s combat, emphasizing army composition and battlefield decisions rather than a single fixed approach.
Winter Assault supports both single-player and multiplayer. Its multiplayer offers new maps, observer mode, arranged team play and improved matchmaking; a skirmish option lets players practice against computer-controlled opponents on multiplayer maps.
