WAR RATS: The Rat em Up casts its conflict as a struggle to reclaim Ratopia from TechnoRat, a collective consciousness of cyborg rats bent on consuming flesh and turning it into metal. Its hand-drawn, side-scrolling action blends shooter combat, roguelite progression and tower-defense strategy, with a deliberately gory visual style. Rather than sending a lone hero into the fray, the game asks players to lead troops while pushing toward the enemy base.
Survival depends on balancing direct fighting with command and preparation. Players recruit rat units, call in reinforcements, buy weapons and gear, and build defenses such as turrets, walls and resource generators. Combat runs through districts toward TechnoRat HQ; death lets players spend earned CHz to improve attributes. The customizable Rats Nest serves as a base of operations, while difficulty settings include an Iron Rat option that restarts a run at level one after death.
The game also offers distinct ways to engage with its systems: a single-player campaign, Horde Mode’s escalating enemy waves from both sides, Skirmish Mode’s selectable maps and opponents, and New Game + runs with light procedural variation. Its mix of frantic shooting, troop management and defensive construction is the defining feature of the experience.
