War on the Sea places players in the 1942 struggle for control of the Solomon Islands, where Japanese expansion meets Allied efforts to stop it. The campaign’s central problem is protecting transports carrying troops and supplies across the South Pacific. Players can choose Allied forces or Imperial Japan, framing the conflict from either side of the naval contest.
Its real-time naval battles ask players to weigh different ways of controlling the area: use aircraft carriers for air cover, patrol with submarines, or try to draw the opposing navy into a surface engagement. The game offers tactical control of aircraft, but it is explicitly not a flight simulator. Ship survival also involves responding to damage by fighting fires, countering flooding and repairing vessels, with realistic buoyancy physics shaping how ships sink.
A dynamic campaign sits alongside historical missions based on actual naval engagements, while more than fifty classes of playable ships give the fleet its range.
