War for the Overworld turns the familiar dungeon-crawling premise around: instead of invading a lair, you excavate and manage one beneath the overworld. Its strategy-and-simulation design centers on shaping an underground fortress, keeping minions in line and preparing a hostile welcome for trespassing heroes. Richard Ridings provides the voice of evil, adding a distinctive narrator to the dungeon-building fantasy.
The game offers a broad toolkit of rooms, spells, potions, rituals, defences and constructs, letting players develop their stronghold and deploy its resources against the forces above. Six modes give that design different settings, including Campaign, Skirmish, Scenarios, Multiplayer and Survival, alongside My Pet Dungeon. A map editor with scripting support extends the creative side, while Steam Workshop sharing lets players distribute custom maps and campaigns. Mutators also allow changes to the game’s rules.
Its defining appeal lies in taking command of the dungeon itself, combining fortress planning and minion management with a playful, thoroughly villainous point of view.
