On Fort Lemuria, a remote island of ruins and unusual creatures, Fina joins a Research Commission devoted to studying monsters. She witnessed the apparent destruction of the island guardian Volzerk and the legendary beast Magna; ten years later, she hopes to meet Volzerk again while the island’s monsters face danger. That story gives the adventure a clear focus: exploration and a personal bond with the creatures are part of the same quest.
Combat combines riders and monsters rather than treating creatures as scenery. Players can pair different monsters with different characters to access varied skills, use distinct weapon types, and switch characters at the right moment against powerful enemies. Between battles, monster raising is central: characters can pass abilities to creatures, while crossbreeding combines two monsters into a new one that inherits abilities from both parents. The game also describes crossbreeding with friends’ monsters, adding a shared dimension to its otherwise single-player listing.
Its format is an action RPG built around character switching, creature development, and battles, with the island’s investigation providing narrative context for those systems. Volzerk’s defining appeal, as described, is the link between action combat and shaping a roster of monsters to suit a player’s style.
