Void Bastards casts you as the leader of a rag-tag group trying to escape the Sargasso Nebula. Rather than treating each encounter as a straightforward shootout, the game puts route and mission decisions up front: you choose where to travel, what to do, and which enemies to confront. Its single-player format frames the action as a personal campaign of judgment and adaptation, not a shared multiplayer match.
Each derelict ship is a compact tactical problem. You can study its layout and anticipate hazards, enemies, terminals, and systems before moving through it in search of supplies. Decisions such as restoring power at a generator or disabling defenses through a security module make ship systems part of the combat plan. When danger rises, you choose whether to fight, flee, or take another approach; scavenged resources can also be used to improvise tools and weapons, including a distracting robo-kitty and an unstable clusterflak.
The larger journey adds a resource-management layer to those boarding missions. Between ships, you navigate an escape pod through the nebula, evade threats, and keep gathering food, fuel, and other necessities. The campaign uses successive prisoners with individual traits, so a death does not end the run, while crafting progress carries forward.
