Victoria II is a grand strategy game set in the colonial era, asking players to steer a country from the early nineteenth century toward the dawn of the twentieth. The premise is nation-building on a broad historical canvas: industrialisation, political reform, military conquest and colonization all shape a country’s path to becoming a great power. Its many playable countries place that project in distinct national contexts.
The simulation connects government and society to decisions made at the top. Dozens of government types and political reforms frame rule, while the population responds according to political awareness, social class and willingness to accept or resist its government. A detailed economy covers more than fifty goods and production factories; technological discoveries, missions and automation of tasks such as trade add further strands to managing a country. Great powers also compete for influence, and the game’s gunboat diplomacy makes naval presence one means of applying pressure.
Victoria II supports both single-player and multiplayer, so its national-management premise can be approached alone or with other players.
