Veterum sets its campaign against an approaching catastrophe: prophets warn of an apocalypse, while blood cults and other threats spread through ancient wilds. You command the Order of the Gatekeepers’ last army, recruiting humans alongside dwarves, elvers and turans. Those alliances are not frictionless, since the game notes that some fighters may resist standing beside other races. The open-world campaign gives you latitude to choose where your army travels and which quests it pursues.
Battles hinge on more than choosing strong units. You select fighters for particular opponents and account for facing, line of sight, morale, fatigue, illumination and weather. The battlefield itself is part of the tactical problem: soldiers can build barricades or dig ditches, while other actions include freezing rivers and cutting trees. Before combat, one-use scrolls can alter conditions, including by bringing rain, poisoning enemies or creating a catapult. Between encounters, rare artifacts and equipment, stat improvements, and active or passive skills support army development.
Randomly generated quests, battles and city goods make each playthrough distinct, while adjustable difficulty lets players tune several settings, including hit chance, health and rewards. A unit and map editor also lets players create missions to share.
