Set on the Western Front from 1914 to 1918, Verdun is a multiplayer first-person shooter shaped around the brutal trench fighting associated with the 1916 Battle of Verdun. Its maps draw on real battlefields in France and Belgium, while historically modeled weapons and uniforms establish a grounded World War One setting. The result is not simply a rifle duel across open terrain: fighting at close quarters makes bayonet skill as important as accurate shooting.
Verdun’s weapons handle differently, with realistic bullet physics and no floating crosshairs to guide aim. Players push across no man’s land to seize the next trench, then defend their gains as the frontline shifts through attacks and counterattacks. Gas, claustrophobic mask use, artillery and optional gore reinforce the hazards of the battlefield. Squad play adds another tactical layer, with distinctive squad types representing soldiers from multiple countries and carrying their own weapons and equipment.
The game offers four modes with different team-based formats: Frontlines centers on capturing and holding trench lines, Attrition emphasizes tactics, Rifle Deathmatch tests individual skill, and Squad Defense pits players against relentless pressure. Frontlines is specifically described as a 64-player mode, with players taking turns going over the top.
