Valkyria Chronicles places Europa in a fictional 1930s-inspired setting, where the Empire invades the small principality of Gallia for its Ragnite resources. Welkin and Squad 7, soldiers of the Gallian Militia, resist the advance; their campaign takes a mythic turn when they discover the Empire’s Valkyrur, an ancient people believed to exist only in legend. The conflict gives the game’s military struggle a personal and fantastical dimension.
Its BLiTZ battle system blends strategic unit manoeuvres with conventional RPG elements and real-time control. Players command individual squad members and tanks, making battlefield positioning part of the action rather than a detached planning phase. The Canvas graphics engine gives the presentation a contrasting softness, rendering scenes to resemble watercolour paintings in motion. Between that visual style and the tactical combat, the game pairs an illustrated look with decisions grounded in terrain and unit placement.
Its battles span varied environments, where terrain can be used to gain an advantage, and more than 100 customisable characters support different platoon compositions. The PC edition described on Steam also bundles previously released downloadable content, including side-story campaigns and challenge missions, extending the game’s military world beyond the central struggle. The result is a story-led strategy RPG whose distinctive identity comes from combining real-time command, squad tactics and painterly presentation.
