Unsolved Case is a free, standalone prequel to the Cryptic Killer puzzle series, following detectives Ally and Old Dog as the killer resurfaces to taunt them. A mysterious locked box sets the investigation in motion, with the detectives pursuing new leads through illustrated, noir-inspired locations. The story returns to the origins of the series’ detective duo while setting up a mystery around whether the imprisoned killer has returned or a copycat is responsible.
Its defining idea is that cooperation depends on comparing incomplete information: each player sees different items and clues, and each receives half of a puzzle at a location. Solving codes and working through challenges therefore calls for conversation and collaboration, rather than simply tackling the same screen side by side. Players can also pull out a notebook and write notes or scribble on their environment, making deduction and communication part of the game’s hands-on design.
The game is built for two-player online co-op, with each person needing a copy and internet connection and voice communication described as essential. Its compact, focused puzzle format is presented as a short case in the larger Cryptic Killer series.
