Ultimate General: Civil War is a tactical real-time strategy game set during the American Civil War of 1861–1865. Its campaign spans more than 50 battles, from smaller engagements to large clashes that may last several days across hundreds of square miles. Players can also take on historical battles separately, giving the game a campaign structure as well as standalone scenarios.
The central challenge extends beyond directing troops in a single fight. Players manage army composition, supplies and soldiers whose experience improves if they survive; heavy losses can leave reinforcements scarce and damage morale and reputation. Command can be hands-on, with orders for individual units, or broader: assign a main objective, draw a defensive line, or sketch an arrow for a flanking maneuver. Divisions’ commanders may make decisions independently, while officers can rise in rank, become more capable, or be wounded or killed.
Terrain and battlefield logistics shape those plans. Hills improve visibility, rivers and bridges can obstruct an advance, and forests offer cover for concealed movement. Players can detach skirmishers, combine brigades, and mount or dismount cavalry, while the opposing AI may exploit weak positions and threaten supplies.
