UFO 50 presents a fictional library of games made by an obscure, ahead-of-its-time 1980s company. Its fifty titles span platformers, shoot ’em ups, puzzle games, roguelites, and RPGs, with a shared 32-color palette and an 8-bit aesthetic. The collection treats its entries as complete games rather than tiny diversions, while drawing on ideas beyond the design conventions of the era it evokes.
The variety is expressed through different rules, not just changing genres. In Campanella 2, procedurally generated levels let players explore in a UFO, then leave it to enter shops and dangerous caves. Seaside Drive is a car-based shoot ’em up where drifting across the screen powers up the gun. Grimstone offers a Western-set JRPG, with a party formed from the ashes of a burned-down saloon and a skill-based element in combat. These examples give the collection a broad range of play without one central ruleset.
All fifty titles are available from the start, and players can move between them at will. Half the collection features local co-op or versus play; Quibble Race, for example, combines turn-based betting and bluffing and supports up to three players.
