In Tribes of Midgard, the looming threat is Ragnarök: Giants advance on a Viking village built around the Seed of Yggdrasil, the last bastion protecting the Gods from other Realms. The struggle combines wilderness exploration with keeping that settlement safe, giving the game a survival-minded premise centered on a shared home and an approaching catastrophe.
Gathered materials feed into crafting and village reinforcement, while exploration can uncover relics, merchants and enemy camps. Players can also build structures across the terrain, including routes over rivers and up cliffs, and take on enemies in the wild for rewards. At night, the focus shifts to defending the village from forces associated with Hel; Giants pose a separate, escalating danger to the Seed. These linked tasks make preparation, exploration and defense parts of the same Viking adventure.
The game supports single-player as well as cooperative play, with its description framing a tribe of one to ten players that can explore, craft and defend together.
