Tormented Souls follows Caroline Walker as she investigates the disappearance of twin girls at Winterlake. She wakes in an abandoned mansion, connected to outdated medical equipment, and must explore its halls while trying to survive and uncover the truth. The setup places the mystery inside a hostile, isolated setting, where the mansion and its grounds hold clues to a sordid history.
Its design draws on classic survival horror while updating the fixed-perspective action-adventure format with modernized controls and a dynamic camera. Combat matters, but so do observation and resource management: Caroline searches for useful items, combines them to solve puzzles, and studies clues in old journals. Mirrors open routes to an alternate reality and another point in time, giving her a way to manipulate reality as she explores. These linked systems make investigation and puzzle-solving central to the horror, rather than relying on aim and reflexes alone.
Its focus stays on Caroline’s progress through Winterlake: gathering resources, confronting the horrors in the mansion, and piecing together what happened there.
