Torment: Tides of Numenera begins with an extraordinary premise: the player is born falling from orbit, inhabiting a body once used by the Changing God, an elusive being that has evaded death for millennia. The journey leads through the Ninth World while the protagonist seeks escape from the Sorrow, an ancient, unstoppable creature, and confronts the question, “What does one life matter?” This is a single-player, isometric role-playing game built around a personal, philosophical narrative rather than a shared multiplayer world.
Its defining tools are words, choices, and actions. Decisions can shape the fates of other characters, and companions with distinct motives may help or hinder the journey. The setting’s morality resists simple right-and-wrong answers; characters respond to decisions and reputation, making reactivity and replayability part of the game’s design. Strange items, magic, and imaginative locations add to the Ninth World’s unusual character.
Combat also departs from a straightforward battle-only format. The Crisis system uses hand-crafted encounters that can bring together fighting, environmental puzzles, social interaction, and stealth.
