Thronebreaker is a single-player role-playing game set in The Witcher world, following Meve, a war-veteran queen of Lyria and Rivia. With Nilfgaard poised to invade, she returns to war on a journey shaped by destruction and revenge. The story’s difficult choices affect the world and carry consequences, while quests bring Meve into contact with characters who may become companions or opponents.
Exploration is paired with card-based battles and bespoke puzzles rather than relying on combat alone. Players travel through distinct regions, take on tasks such as rescuing villages from monsters and searching ruins for treasure, and gather resources. At camp, they can recruit and train units, unlock skills, refine tactics, and trade with local merchants; the army they assemble from characters met along the way then figures in story battles and challenges.
That blend of narrative decisions, exploration, camp management, and tactical encounters defines a deliberately solo play format. Its distinctive appeal lies in bringing role-playing storytelling and card-battle problem-solving together within the broader Witcher setting.
