The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person mystery in which occult-minded detective Paul Prospero investigates the disappearance of a boy in Red Creek Valley. After receiving Ethan’s disturbing letter, Paul reaches the boy’s home and finds a case entangled with a brutal murder and a trail of other deaths. The story draws on pulp, private-eye and horror fiction, but its emphasis is less on scares than on atmosphere and the humanity of its characters.
Investigation depends on observation and supernatural inquiry rather than combat: the game contains no combat or explosions. Paul can communicate with the dead and witness how they died, giving him clues to piece together what happened. Players explore and interact with the valley, then connect discoveries across a non-linear story. The design is not especially puzzle-heavy, and the investigation proceeds on the player’s own terms and at their own pace.
Its central appeal is following evidence through an ominous landscape, using both Prospero’s unusual ability and the player’s own powers of observation to uncover Ethan’s fate and the valley’s darker history.
