The Unliving casts the player as a necromancer seeking to overturn a corrupted realm, with the dead serving as both followers and weapons. Its central hook is practical as well as theatrical: fallen enemies can be resurrected, and different undead bring distinct abilities into the growing army. That makes combat about more than defeating whoever stands in the way; each encounter can also supply new forces for the next push.
The game combines rogue-lite action-RPG combat with strategic elements, spells and a world randomly generated for each run. Enemies are not simply passive targets: groups hold their ground and use powerful abilities, while bosses have individual fighting styles that call for tactical thought. Exploration adds villages, swamps, artefacts, secret rooms and traps, giving runs varied settings and challenges. Death is framed as a setback for the necromancer, whose lost memories and immortality also anchor the story’s mysteries.
The single-player format keeps the focus on directing this campaign alone, from managing an undead force in battle to uncovering secrets through encounters with characters and the necromantic cult.
