The Three Kingdoms: The Tales of Jian An is a traditional turn-based strategy game shaped around a story set in the late Eastern Han period. Its historical narrative draws on records including Records of the Three Kingdoms, Zizhi Tongjian and Book of the Later Han, then expands and fictionalizes events. Rather than retelling familiar scenes from Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it offers a distinct account of the era, giving the game’s campaign a documented-history foundation without presenting it as a strict historical reconstruction.
Play is divided between Story Mode and Battle Mode. The former foregrounds the detailed historical narrative, while combat retains a turn-based structure and adds a Fog System, Weather System and Time Change System. These battlefield conditions distinguish its tactical design from a bare presentation of classic turn-based strategy. A battlefield completion system and achievements also recognize command performance, while character, treasure and legend encyclopedias, alongside glossary and music appreciation collections, give completion-minded players material to explore beyond the central battles.
Its appeal is therefore framed by the interplay of historical storytelling, turn-by-turn decisions and optional collecting. For strategy players, Jian An’s identity lies not just in its Three Kingdoms setting, but in its alternative historical treatment and the changing conditions built into its battle system.
