The Sheltered is a top-down adventure set after a deadly outbreak, as a government plan to destroy infected areas with nuclear weapons threatens everything nearby. The player begins with a fallout shelter and enough food and water for themselves, but other survivors soon arrive seeking refuge. The central tension is not simply finding safety: choosing whom to admit puts survival resources against personal morals.
Exploration supplies the practical side of those choices. With provisions initially limited, the player searches the surrounding land for more, while deciding whether to shelter children, adults who may offer help, or animals. Each additional resident needs supplies, and the people the player saves can remember past actions and respond accordingly. The game also combines puzzles with encounters involving monsters that can be outgunned, outrun, or outwitted; decisions and puzzle solutions carry consequences, and the story offers multiple endings.
This is a single-player experience, so its defining play format is an individual journey through exploration, resource decisions, and branching outcomes rather than a shared multiplayer session. Its old-school graphics and simple gameplay sit alongside modern storytelling and a choice-driven premise, giving the survival adventure its distinctive character.
