The Scouring blends strategy-game army command with action RPG combat. Players directly control a powerful hero, using abilities and equipment while AI handles the army, its resources, and base management. That division of labor gives the game its central twist: directing the larger war does not mean giving up hands-on fighting. Its setting also adds a survival pressure, with bases facing waves of undead at night.
Battles draw on spells, weapons, and tactics, while hero progression lets players gain experience, find items, and customize a playstyle. Dungeons provide another reason to venture out in search of valuable gear. Alongside the campaign-style strategic premise, the game supports multiplayer team skirmishes and free-for-alls, with matches customizable for up to eight players.
The design also invites players to change the battlefield itself. Steam Workshop support includes custom maps and modes, as well as AI scripts that can automate strategies and run in real time. This makes The Scouring more than a fixed contest of base-building and combat: its mix of hero control, army management, and player-created scenarios gives matches several distinct ways to unfold.
