The Sapling is a simulation about designing life and watching it shape an ecosystem. Players create algae and plants, from dark-glowing flowers to giant, spike-covered trees, alongside aquatic, land and flying animals. The unusual design premise is not simply to populate a planet, but to decide how its organisms are built and see how they fit into a living system.
Scenarios introduce the simulation through tasks: each asks players to build an ecosystem around specific requirements while adding a small number of concepts. Sandbox play opens up the same functionality with everything unlocked, plus a procedural planet generator and tools to define up to eight seasons. Players can also change the world while playing, including bringing on an ice age. Random mutations add an evolutionary layer: species may fill available niches, lose out to competitors or disappear as the ecosystem changes.
That blend of deliberate world-building and simulated evolution distinguishes The Sapling from a fixed-objective management game.
