The Room 4: Old Sins follows the disappearance of an ambitious engineer and his high-society wife. Their search for a precious artefact leads to the attic of their home, where an old, peculiar dollhouse opens onto the mysteries of Waldegrave Manor. This uneasy domestic setting gives the adventure a story-driven frame: discovery means piecing together what happened as well as investigating the house.
Play centres on exploring the dollhouse’s multiple rooms, following obscure clues and manipulating bizarre contraptions. That combination makes the rooms more than scenery: they are the places where the player examines clues and works through the game’s puzzles. The distinctive design pairs a miniature house with unsettling locations and intricate objects, while continuing the puzzle approach of the earlier Room games. The PC edition also features rebuilt, re-textured and re-lit objects and environments compared with the mobile release.
Its appeal rests on careful exploration, puzzling mechanisms and a mystery that unfolds through the attic dollhouse, not on competition or cooperation with other players.
