The Past Within is a co-op-only point-and-click adventure set in the mysterious world of Rusty Lake. Two friends work together to uncover mysteries surrounding Albert Vanderboom and help Rose set her father’s plan in motion. Its central premise makes cooperation essential: one player explores the past while the other inhabits the future, with neither able to explore the story alone.
Each player encounters a different environment and perspective, presented in either 2D or 3D. Progress depends on communicating what each person sees and using those observations to solve puzzles together. The game’s two chapters have an average playtime of two hours; replaying from the other perspective offers another way to experience its puzzles, which can receive fresh solutions through the replayability feature. The pair can play on their preferred platforms as long as they can communicate.
The game’s defining appeal lies in coordinating across its past-and-future split, comparing distinct views of the same mystery, and piecing together clues that neither partner encounters alone.
