THE LONGING pairs adventure with idle-game timing, casting you as a lonely Shade, servant to a king beneath the earth. The ruler has fallen asleep for 400 days to regain his powers, and the Shade’s countdown begins as soon as the game starts. It continues even after you exit, making the passage of time part of the premise rather than something confined to a play session.
There is no need to hurry through the caves. You can leave the Shade waiting, send it on a slow stroll to explore the hand-drawn underground world, or collect items to make its living room more comfortable. The game also lets the Shade read classic literature, with books including Nietzsche and Moby Dick; its description notes that the available books are in English. For players who choose to venture farther, the caves lead toward outer regions described as a long, dangerous journey. Time-based puzzles, hidden secrets and various endings give exploration more to uncover.
Its design makes solitary waiting and gradual exploration equally relevant ways to engage with the game, rather than framing every session around rapid progress.
