The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak places Van Arkride, a young spriggan, in the Calvard Republic as the country enjoys economic prosperity but faces uncertainty over immigration and political reform. Van’s Arkride Solutions office takes on complicated work beyond the reach of more legitimate channels, from detective and negotiating jobs to bounty hunting. A request from a young academy student sets a new tale in motion, with the possibility of national unrest hanging over the story.
Combat shifts between field battles and turn-based encounters through a revamped AT system, linking action in the field to command-based fights. The Xipha combat orbment adds a system specific to this entry in the Trails series. Players can also collect conversation topics by interacting with city residents, then use those topics as bargaining chips to gain an advantage in battle. The design ties exploration and conversations to combat rather than keeping them separate.
An Alignment system lets players change three attributes, with effects on Van’s status, the forces he encounters as allies or opponents, and how the story unfolds. Its appeal rests on following Van’s work and engaging with the systems that shape both fights and the narrative.
