The Imperial Gatekeeper casts players as Thill the Spearman, a celebrated soldier reassigned to a newly formed Traffic Security Bureau. Rather than fight on the front lines, Thill leads a checkpoint squad under Olivia Riedell, whose vision favors civil servants over soldiers. The shift in career gives the game its central tension: duty remains, but now it means deciding who may cross the border while navigating a changing political world.
At each checkpoint, applicants bring documents and stories that must stand up to inspection. Players compare dates, photographs and descriptions, spot counterfeit papers, and keep the queue moving without sacrificing accuracy. Time is limited, and performance affects pay and career progress. Earned money can go toward a wandering merchant’s tools, including a metal detector for hidden weapons and perfume that slows applicants’ stress. The work is built around an interactive inspection minigame, with randomly generated visitors alongside handcrafted characters whose stories and sidequests emerge under the right conditions.
The single-player format puts those repeated decisions in the foreground, while the story links performance to transfers across regions with evolving entry rules. Wanted posters add another layer of scrutiny, and locations, regulations and encounters contribute to narrative progress.
