The Farmer Was Replaced turns repetitive farm work into a programming challenge. Players write instructions for a drone in a simple Python-like language, then press execute and watch it carry out farming tasks. Rather than dividing play into separate levels, the game uses continuous progression: farming generates resources that can be spent to unlock new technology.
Learning the language is part of the design. The game introduces basic programming concepts one at a time, but leaves players to work out how to solve its tasks. That distinction shapes the challenge: newcomers may need to puzzle through both the concepts and their application, while experienced programmers can move through the early game quickly and face more complex tasks later. The language is similar to Python, and code is stored in .py files; players can also edit it in an external editor such as VS Code, with an optional setting that detects external changes.
Its single-player format makes this a self-directed, iterative experience rather than a session built around coordinating with other people. The appeal lies in turning farm chores into a system to solve, then letting the programmed drone do the work.
