The Escapists 2 turns prison life into a puzzle of appearances and preparation. Players follow daily routines, including roll call and prison jobs, while quietly working toward escape. Its prisons span multiple floors and can include roofs, vents, and underground tunnels, giving plans more than one route to explore. The settings range from a frozen facility to a train crossing the desert, keeping the breakout premise varied.
Progress depends on making useful things from limited supplies and spotting ways to conceal suspicious activity. Everyday objects can become tools or weapons: the store description gives soap and socks as crafting ingredients, and describes using stolen forks to chip through a cell wall. A poster made from magazines and duct tape can hide evidence. Combat also has a defined role, with blocking, linked attacks, and movement around a locked-on opponent forming the brawl system.
The game supports solo play as well as cooperative and versus sessions, both online and on a shared screen. Up to four players can cooperate on escape plans, while versus mode turns getting out first into a contest; drop-in/drop-out play is also listed.
