The Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet Of Chaos turns a comic fantasy premise into a party-based tactical RPG. A mismatched crew of inexperienced, quarrelsome adventurers sets out to claim a dungeon’s treasure, drawing on a universe that began as a French audio comedy parodying role-playing games and heroic fantasy. The tone leans into clumsy heroes, absurd situations and unusual encounters rather than solemn epic fantasy.
Combat is turn-based, with seven familiar archetypes, from the Ranger and Elf to the Ogre and Thief, whose skills can complement one another through support mechanics. Each character has a skill tree for improving abilities and equipment, while players can select an additional companion. Difficulty ranges from a story mode with simplified combat to a more punishing nightmare mode, and a bestiary of more than 100 enemies encourages tactical adjustments. Boss fights, destructible objects with status effects, traps and puzzles add variety to the dungeon’s challenges.
Exploration carries the same comic sensibility into locations ranging from caves to a goblin ice-skating park and a lively tavern, alongside side quests and the main story. The appeal rests on managing an unruly fantasy party through strategic fights and a deliberately chaotic world.
