The Cycle: Frontier sends Prospectors from Prospect Station to Fortuna III, a hostile alien world where faction assignments and valuable loot draw players into dangerous expeditions. Before dropping in, players choose gear and weapons for their aims; once planetside, the task is to gather resources and escape back to the station with whatever they have secured. Other Prospectors are pursuing their own goals, so a run can become a player-versus-player confrontation as readily as a search for loot.
Its defining tension comes from what happens at extraction: escape preserves the loot, while falling in the field leaves both collected valuables and equipped gear behind. Players weigh those stakes against hostile alien wildlife and the radioactive Storm, using terrain, listening carefully and choosing which fights to take. The game offers three distinct maps, from Bright Sands to the more dangerous Crescent Falls and Tharis Island, alongside faction missions, gear crafting, weapon attachments and private-quarter upgrades that give successful trips a longer-term purpose.
The format combines solo play with duos and squads of three, while persistent map instances support near-instant matchmaking. The Steam listing also states that the game shut down on September 27, 2023, an important part of its context.
