The Ball casts the player as an archaeologist stranded in a cavern on the slopes of a dormant Mexican volcano. Exploring the ancient ruins reveals a gold-and-metal artifact, and the journey deeper underground becomes a search for the place’s secrets. Its adventure premise pairs archaeological discovery with the threat of creatures guarding the buried mystery.
The artifact is also the heart of the gameplay: players learn to control the Ball and rely on it to defend themselves against the strange creatures they encounter. The game emphasizes physics-based play with mechanics described as simple to pick up, while its levels mix puzzles and traps. Mummies and an undead gorilla are among the enemies, and the underground train and Ball Chariot add unusual vehicles to the expedition.
The main experience is a single-player adventure, with eight large levels and a stated length of eight hours. A separate Survival mode adds four levels, giving the game an additional format alongside its story-led exploration.
