Tempest Rising casts players as commanders in a modern-day alternate-history conflict, where the Global Defense Forces and Tempest Dynasty fight over mysterious vines spreading across a war-torn Earth. Its two single-player campaigns each span 11 missions, with voiced briefings and the option to customize an army for each mission. The premise gives the familiar RTS struggle for territory a specific objective: understanding and controlling the Tempest.
The action centers on classic base-building and real-time battles, with three factions offering distinct approaches to combat and economy. Unit rosters and faction-specific superweapons shape each force’s style, while the game’s built-in customization lets players tailor how they approach single-player and multiplayer. The ancient Veti faction is available in multiplayer and skirmish, while its campaign is sold separately.
Tempest Rising supports solo skirmishes, custom games against AI, and online competition through 1v1 and 2v2 matchmaking, including ranked play with a Glicko-2 rating system. Skirmish also allows up to 500 units per team, emphasizing the scale of battles players can set up alone.
