Techtonica sends players into the bioluminescent underground of Calyx, where an expedition has gone wrong and the mystery lies below the surface. Its story campaign is fully voice-acted, and cubic companions bring their own motives and secrets to the effort to revive the expedition. This narrative framing gives factory construction an unusual purpose: production unfolds alongside exploration and discovery.
The core loop combines digging, resource gathering, research, and automation. Players use specialized machines to build production systems, linking them with conveyor belts and inserters, while upgrades expand the challenges and solutions available. Exploration can lead to ore deposits, research facilities, hidden caves, new technologies, and aging artifacts. The environment is also a construction tool: a black hole gun called the MOLE can carve through stone, and pumps can drain sand to reveal what lies beneath.
Its first-person perspective, cave-sculpting, and factory-scale automation distinguish it from a production game set on an open surface: here, players reshape an alien subterranean world as they build.
