Tears of Metal frames its action around an island under occupation: the player leads a Scottish battalion against invaders mining power from the Mother Dragon Stone. Battles span large environments filled with enemies and difficult encounters, giving the campaign a clear objective beyond simply surviving each fight.
Combat builds on repeat runs and changing combinations of power. Players choose among distinct heroes, collect upgrades, and combine them with more than a hundred artifacts to shape their attacks. Emblems add another source of synergy during a campaign, while newly rallied troops can receive permanent upgrades and grow more capable over time. That mix of changing builds and lasting progression gives the island reconquest both immediate combat goals and longer-term development.
Between campaigns, players can expand a settlement to open shops, purchase permanent improvements, and unlock tougher challenges for greater rewards. Special objectives can uncover artifacts, characters, cosmetics, upgrades, and combos, while the game describes its battlefields as handcrafted environments with varied scenarios and objectives. Together, these systems make Tears of Metal a co-op-capable action campaign shaped by tactical build choices, troop development, and settlement progression, rather than a purely standalone sequence of fights.
